This is an illustrative example, not a named client. It describes the approach we take with this kind of business and the outcomes that are typical of that work. The figures are representative rather than one specific client's audited results.

Trades businesses lose local search to franchise operators for a specific and fixable reason: the franchise has one page for every service in every suburb, and the local business has one page called “Services”.

The situation we usually find

An established operator with genuinely better reviews than the national franchises, ranking below all of them. The website has a services page listing everything they do in a single bulleted list, a Google Business Profile that was set up once and never touched, and a phone number that’s the only real conversion path.

Meanwhile they’re spending steadily on paid search, because that’s the only thing producing calls, and the cost per call climbs every year.

What the work looks like

Separate pages for separate services. Search engines can’t rank one page for eight distinct services. Hot water systems, blocked drains, gas fitting and bathroom renovations are four different searches with four different intents, and each needs somewhere to land.

Take the Google Business Profile seriously. For a local trade this is frequently worth more than the website. Correct categories, complete service list, photographs of actual work, and a genuine process for asking satisfied customers for reviews.

Emergency intent handled separately. Someone searching “burst pipe” at 11pm behaves nothing like someone researching a bathroom renovation. They want a phone number, an answer about whether you’re available now, and nothing else on the page.

Consistent details everywhere. Name, address and phone identical across every directory and listing. Discrepancies dilute local ranking, and they accumulate silently over years.

Speed, because of where they are. These visitors are on a phone, often outdoors, often on poor reception, frequently in a hurry. A four second load is a lost job.

Why the paid spend usually drops

Not because paid search stops working, but because organic starts absorbing the searches that were previously being bought. The ad budget then concentrates on genuinely competitive terms rather than defending your own brand name and every obvious service phrase.

That shift is where the improvement in blended cost per enquiry comes from.
